Lewiston and Auburn, Maine

Moving along further North is the state of Maine. This New England state has a set of twin’s as well. Lewiston and Auburn. These towns were established and built reminisent to the ways of the immigrant settlers. The Irish arrived first in 1850 during the potato famine, and soon the french canadians came down from Quebec. There were Italians, Greeks, Lithuanians, Russians, English and Scotish immigrants arriving at the rate of 100 to 150 a day. The Grand Trunk Station (erected 1882) was the train station where they arrived when the train transported these folks and is often referred to as the “ELLIS ISLAND” of Lewiston.

Lewiston- a textile manufacturing center and Auburn-a shoe industry, always had common roots that were entwined with the Androscoggin River and the industrial base it spawned.

A Historical walking tour leads you through the history and heritage that was based on the determination, labor, and imagination of two cities and the people who designed and built them.

Moving along into the mid western states we have twin cities in the state of Illinois.
